The Difference between Followership and Leadership
Leadership and followership share several traits, but differ in the way those traits are applied. To be a good leader or follower, these traits must be exercised with thought and good judgment.
“Followership is reaching a specific goal while exercising respect for authority, a positive attitude, integrity and self discipline.” Followership, to me, is the most important first step in becoming a great leader. When one learns to be a follower, one has begun the process of becoming a great leader. In order to become a good follower, however, a person must master three leadership traits that are essential to followership. These traits, loyalty, integrity, and self-discipline, are the basis for growth into leadership. It is also important to note the characteristics of a good follower.
First of all, a good follower is able to support the leader even when their views are different. In order to be able to do that, one should respect the authority and the responsibilities held by a leader, and air any differences through proper channels at appropriate times.
Secondly, a good follower knows what the job is, and how to do the job. A follower exercises this knowledge by then doing the job. In order to be able to do that a follower must understand what the job requires, and what the leader expects, before taking action.
Thirdly, a good follower is able to get along with the leader. For example, a follower follows the orders given to him/her, but is not afraid to question them when the orders given might change the outcome that the leader expected. Once you are able to do this, you become a trusted advisor to your leader. But remember not to over question orders; orders should only be questioned at the proper time and in the proper place.
The fourth characteristic is that a good follower gives their leader the proper and correct information that he has requested. By being accurate and reliable, a follower earns the much needed trust in a working relationship.
A fifth characteristic is dynamic initiative. A wise follower learns by looking for chances to become independent as a professional. A wise follower also doesn’t say, “That’s not my job,” but, takes every chance to experience something new and learns from it. Dynamic initiative means always asking what needs to be done.
Finally, wise and dynamic followers take responsibility for their own actions. Remember, all leaders were, and still are followers to an extent. For example, even the President of the United States of America has to follow the Constitution. No matter what position you will be in, you will be following someone or something, even if you don’t think you are.
Leadership is the process of influencing people to achieve a common objective, goal, or mission. A leader is someone who motivates people to achieve goals common to themselves and their group. In order to motivate others you will need a purpose, a plan to accomplish the purpose, and people who are willing and have the confidence to follow your lead. In order to be able to do this, a leader must always be aware of human relations. This can be very difficult to do because you must put yourself in their roles and be able to understand their characteristics and their viewpoints. A leader must be able to get the job done, no matter what, but yet, at the same time, be able to meet people’s needs.
There are three styles of leading that a leader must be able to exercise. These three styles are: authoritarian, democratic, and laissez faire. As your experience with these styles of leading begin to develop, you will be able to learn where, when, what, why, how, and how much of each leadership style to use in any situation. If you are willing to grow as a leader, you must be willing to constantly adjust your approach.
As a leader you must keep these few things in mind:
1.) Leadership effectiveness is determined by what your followers expect.
2.) If leadership is truly effective it will readily gain the respect, loyalty, trust and willing obedience from followers. People will only follow leaders who acted the way followers expect a good leader to act.
3.) The ability to adapt and regulate your behavior according to the demands of the situation is essential to a good leader.
Last, but not least, in order to become a truly great leader; you must be an excellent follower.
Given all this information, I conclude that there are distinct differences between followership and leadership. For example, a leader leads and a follower follows. I feel, however, that each builds upon the other. In order to be a great leader, you must be an excellent follower. I also feel that if you want to be an outstanding follower, you have the potential to be a leader. For example, you might not want to be a leader at all, but little do you know there will be, if not already, someone that will follow you because to him/her, you are a leader. No matter where you are, I guarantee that there will be someone that will look up to you; it doesn’t matter if you are a leader or a follower, you will have responsibilities.
